  • The Aston Origin Microphone caught my eye relatively quickly after its release on the German market. I was looking for a good, but not too expensive vocal microphone and looked around at manufacturers like Blue, Shure, Sennheiser or AKG. Neumann would (and is) of course also be on my list, but here you are simply in a different price region.

Finishing

The microphone is relatively compact. With a height of just over twelve centimeters, it is quite small and the workmanship is first class. The body is made of brushed steel, looks super noble and is incredibly stable. The “grid” around the microcapsule is also flexible.

Equipment

The Aston Origin has a standard microstand mount right next to the XLR cable. This allows you to screw the Aston directly onto a microphone stand. How far this makes sense due to footstep noise can be argued about. I decided in any case for using the spider.

Settings of the Aston Origin

The Aston Origin has a Low Cut and a -10 DB Pad switch. The microphone’s polar pattern is a cardioid. You don’t have an eight or a sphere. The whole thing is therefore not switchable and has no USB functionality. It’s pure. The transmission range is from 20 – 20.000 Hz (+/- 3 dB) according to the manufacturer. It also has an integrated shock absorber for the microphone capsule.

Sound and application of the Aston Origin

And how does the whole thing sound now and where can it be used?

Now first to the sound. The Origin is absolutely convincing because of its clean, clear, neutral sound, which is rarely, if ever, found in this price range. I use it for vocal and acoustic guitar recordings and here it’s perfect and I can really work with the recorded results. It doesn’t falsify anything.
